ASSESSMENT OF TUMOR REGRESSION IN CHEMORADIOTHERAPY FOR LOCALLY ADVANCED HEAD AND NECK CANCER

Objective. Increasing the effectiveness of chemoradiotherapy the radiation dose hyperfractionation dynamically accelerated with concomitant boost for managing locally advanced head and neck cancer and evaluating the therapeutic effect using the optimal diagnostic imaging method.

Materials and methods. The randomized clinical trial included 430 men with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, tongue, pharynx, and larynx, stages III-IV A, В. All the patients were randomized to the main and control groups. In the main group, radiotherapy in dynamic accelerated hyperfractionation with concomitant boost was used. Conventional dose fractionation radiotherapy was used in the control group. The tumor regression was assessed using magnetic resonance imaging.

Results. Significant differences in the incidence of the complete response of the primary tumor and regional metastases (p<0.001) between the main and control groups were revealed.

Conclusion. The best results were obtained in the group the altered fractionation of radiotherapy had been applied.
