This paper highlights the main provisions of the general theory of systems in relation to scientific researches in biology and medicine. Definitions of such terms as hierarchy, reliability, system-forming element are given. The essence of the theory of functional systems, its importance for development of scientific directions including those in the sphere of normal physiology are revealed in detail. A specific example shows the systematic approach in dentistry role in studying the mechanisms of tooth resistance to caries.
