HIGH DOSE-RATE BRACHYTHERAPY IN RADIOTHERAPY OF PROSTATE CANCER

Objective. The article provides an overview of current data on the use of various modes of treatment for prostate cancer as well as the authors’ own researches results. Evaluation of the event-free survival of patients treated with high dose-rate brachytherapy, combined radiation therapy, and traditional prostatectomy was the main goal of those researches.

Materials and methods. The study included 319 patients examined and treated at the RSPC of Oncology and Medical Radiology from 2008 to 2011 with a follow-up period of 7 years.

Conclusions. The results obtained testify to the comparable efficacy of the studied treatment methods in the group of patients at a low or an intermediate risk and allow create the need for further evaluation of the functional results in order to identify groups of patients combined radiotherapy and high dose-rate brachytherapy will be most effective for.
