Benign prostatic hyperplasia is one of the most common chronic diseases in the male population. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is considered a chronic disease with an early onset and a slow progression. The lower urinary tract symptoms severity, a decreased peak flow rate, an enlarged prostate, a residual urine volume and a high level of the prostate-specific antigen contribute to the benign prostatic hyperplasia progression. As a result of recent studies, it has been shown that metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance with secondary hyperinsulinemia, diabetes mellitus, hormonal changes, inflammation and intravesical prostatic protrusion are additional factors for the benign prostatic hyperplasia progressing.
