The article discusses antiepileptic drugs use in managing pediatric patients with comorbidity of autistic spectrum disorders and epilepsy (or subclinical epileptiform EEG discharges).The unified approach to the pharmacotherapy of both diseases is based on the similar pathophysiological mechanisms of their development, such as: the nervous system immaturity, genetic disposition, violated neurotransmission processes, inflammatory and immune processes in the central nervous system. It has been established that antiepileptic drugs have positive effects including the direct one on the epileptic seizures, but also those on some basic and additional autistic symptoms in comorbidity conditions. Taking into account the literature data, valproate, lamotrigine, and levetiracetam are found to be the most useful in arresting seizures and correcting different cognitive and behavioral disturbances in children with autistic spectrum disorders combined with epilepsy (or subclinical epileptiform EEG discharges).
