Objective. Determining of the cholesterol levels of persons who committed suicide attempts.

Materials and methods. Basing on the data of an 8-year (2007—2014) survey for Minsk residents suicidal behavior, three groups were formed: group 1 included persons who had suicidal attempts (hereinafter GSA — 35 people), persons who had suicidal attempts associated with the death high probability (hanging) included 20 people (GSAD), and the comparison group (СG) was formed of persons who had been diagnosed the adjustment disorder and had not had suicidal attempts earlier (25 people). The cholesterol (CH), high-density lipoproteins (HDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and triglycerides were measured in the peripheral blood. The stress levels were assessed according to the Holmes and Rahe stress scale, the depressive symptoms according the Montgomery — Asberg scale, the motivation for a suicide using the 10-point scale. The results were processed with statistics variation methods.

Results. For the GSAD group, a statistically significant difference in the CH and LDL values was obtained (3.35 mmol/L (2.75—4.10) and 1.63 (1.13—2.84), respectfully). They were compared to the CG levels: CH — 4.6 mmol/L (3.40 — 5.60), LDL — 2.80 mmol/L (1.78—3.53). The data correlated significantly as concerned the cholesterol and LDL values (0.92 — CG and 0.94 — GSAD). The strongest motivation for suicide (GSAD — 8.2 b., GSA — 3.75 b., CG — less 1 b.) and depressive symptoms (21 b. — GSAD, 15 b. — GSA, 11.5 b. — CG) had been revealed in GSAD (р<0.016).

Conclusion. The lowest cholesterol and LDL values (cholesterol — 3.35 mmol/L, (2.75—4.10), LDL — 1.63 mmol/L (1.13—2.84)) were observed in persons having committed parasuicides associated with a high probability of death.
