INFLUENCE OF HYPERHOMOCYSTEINEMIA ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF OBLITERATING ATHEROSCLEROSIS OF LOWER LIMB ARTERIES

Objective. To present the influence of the lower homocysteine content on the development and progressive course of obliterating atherosclerosis of lower limb arteries based on scientific literature analysis.

Material and methods. To achieve the stated aim the keywords search of «homocysteine», «hyperhomocysteinemia», and «obliterating atherosclerosis» has been carried out in the PubMed, MEDLINE, eLibrary bibliography bases.

Results. The review deals with homocysteine pathobiochemical influence on the development of obliterating atherosclerosis of lower limb arteries as well as its prognosis impact on the disease course and the results of the surgical treatment of the given pathology.

Conclusion. Despite the numerous publications proving the interrelation between the homocysteine and obliterating atherosclerosis of lower limb arteries, they are outnumbered by the ones dedicated to the stated amino acid influence on spreading, progressing and treatment results of cardiovascular diseases in cardiology and cardiac surgery. Moreover, some works display controversial results. Thus, studying the interrelation between the homocysteine and obliterating atherosclerosis of lower limb arteries is viewed actual and needs to be continued.
