Drug resistance in human pathogens remains a problem in many countries around the world. The article describes the history of the discovery of antibacterial drugs, the stages of development of drug-resistant strains of pathogens and the difference in their occurrence in different territories. The possible mechanisms of this phenomenon, the influence of drug resistance on the effectiveness of treatment of diseases and preventive measures are analyzed
