Objective. To study the structure of planned surgical interventions for inguinal hernias in elderly patients in the Grodno region and to establish the factors influencing the choice of surgical treatment method.
Materials and methods. This analysis was carried out on the basis of the reports of the chief physicians of the healthcare institutions of the Grodno region, the chief specialist of the surgery, according to the developed questionnaire for 2016—2019. The work used the international classification of inguinal hernias according to L. M. Nyhus and the WHO age classification (elderly patients are persons aged 60 to 74 years).
Results. For the treatment of inguinal hernias in elderly patients, both tension and tension methods of hernioplasty are used. The determining factors in choosing the method of inguinal hernia repair in elderly patients were the material and technical base of the surgical department, the opinion of the surgical school or the surgeon. When choosing a method of surgical treatment, a metric assessment of the inguinal gap is not given, both at the stage of preoperative preparation and during surgery.
Conclusion. A wide range of applied methods of surgical treatment of inguinal hernias indicates the absence of uniform criteria for choosing the method of inguinal hernioplasty. The choice of the method of inguinal hernioplasty requires the introduction of uniform criteria based on the metric assessment of the inguinal gap.
