The present article is an overview of the medical biography of the great composer. It is widely known that Ludwig van Beethoven was deaf. However, few people are aware of the fact that he suffered from a range of disorders some authors tend to consider as a systemic disease and others as a complex set of them. There is a view that Beethoven suffered from deafness of mixed genesis because of otosclerosis and auditory nerve lesions unrelated to other symptoms and his gastrointestinal disorders were secondary symptoms of the inflammatory bowel disease. It is more likely to be Crohn‘s disease, though according to the author, the disease specific (tuberculosis) etiology cannot be excluded. Liver cirrhosis possible in case of inflammatory bowel diseases was exacerbated by alcohol abuse and undoubtedly caused the composer‘s death.
